It’s the Simple Things In Life . . .
If you have what I call an “entrepreneurs spirit” you probably have thought countless times– if only I could come up with a product, I know I could sell it. Believe me I can totally relate to your thoughts. Let me share with you a recent experience.
About four years ago, I created a small book on my computer to record my Internet addresses, login names and passwords along with a couple of lines for notes about each site. Since it was around Christmas time, I printed a few extra copies to give to friends as Christmas stocking stuffers.
Just before the holidays, one of my friends asked if I was planning to make those “little Internet Address Books” again. Seems hers had a few coffee spills and she had been to bookstores and had been unable to find one for purchase.
As soon as she asked the question a lightening bolt flashed before my eyes. I immediately called everyone I had given the book to and ask them if they were still using the little books. Every one of them said yes, they couldn’t live without it. Even the guys loved it.
At this point, my heart started to flutter. How could this be? So, over the course of the next few days I went to several bookstores, gift shops, computer stores and the Internet. . All with the same results –no one had even “heard” of such a thing but all agreed it was a good idea.
To further convince myself, I wasn’t dreaming I created a few more of the little books on my printer and offered them for sale on our web site. Within 24 hours we had our first order. Then another and another.
For four years this little book has sat in front of my computer, I use it religiously every day to keep up with the information I need in my duties as an independent webmaster for over 15 web sites. And never once did I think of offering it for sale to others. How could I miss such a simple thing, laying right in front of me day after day?
Needless, to say, now that I am over feeling like a dodo bird, I have gotten busy and obtained a copyright and an ISBN number and we are promoting ourselves silly. A little book, simply titled “My Internet Addresses” measuring 4.25″ X 5.5″ and weighing in at a hefty 2 ounces has already generated a second printing even before our first printing is back from the printer. The book holds over 300 addresses with two lines for long URLs, one line each for user name and password and two lines for notes on each site
The moral to this whole story is there are acres of diamonds in your own backyard. Take a close look at what you take for granted.
